Having recently had the experience of waiting an hour for a real time game to start (it never did), I think it would be useful to display on each game's landing page the peak time when real time games commence. Or perhaps present it as a histogram.

One downside is there is potentially an anchoring problem because more people may be drawn to playing at that time, thereby reinforcing it.

To combat your potential downfall, maybe an “I prefer to play at these times checkbox”? Although my weekday vs weekend times are different.

There are several games I’d prefer playing live with a larger group but the wait time makes it impossible. So maybe even a “scheduled start real time” where users sign up and know to be online at X o’clock. Allow backup/waitlist spots so it fills and begins at that time?

I like this, too. This post was inspired by the time I waited for an hour, literally, to try to start a game of "Skull" and it never got started. But then I was up really late one night and a game started within a minute and I noticed most of the players were in Australia and Asia. So if I knew that Skull tends to start at a peaks centered around, say, 3 am my time and noon my time, I could plan accordingly, or at least know not to hold my breath outside the peak times.
