My family have a rule that you can pick up the discard pile with a wild and a face card provided that you have already gone down. I feel that should be an option as 'Provided the card can be immediately played.'
We also play that you pick up the value of the face card, so if the top of the discard is a 4 you get 4 cards, 5 (5) 6 (6), Jack (10), Queen (10), King (10), A (11) etc.

YES! Please let us pick up the discard pile with the amounts based on the face value of the cards!!! I've always played that way and it makes it more challenging/ enticing to pick up the pile!

I've not (to my recollection) seen this sort of discard management documented anywhere, which is why this version of the game doesn't have it. Please file a suggestion in the bug tracking system, so it doesn't get lost or forgotten.
