I had not come across the puzzle before.

But was the game inspired on the puzzle? Or the other way around? Or both on something else?

The game was inspired from the puzzle.

The game designer mathgrant used to have an account here

Not sure what has happened to him.

He also designed mammalath.

I think all games of this sort origin from the concept of polyomino. I'm no expert on game origins though. By the way, I do wish proto-games such as this are more open to rule tweaking. For instance, having a larger board ;)
