Just made a bad opening move thinking I was my playing as my preferred color in El Grande… How come I’m not playing my preferred color?

The system could always follow my preference even if it’s the same color as someone else, right? Just show it as a different color for each player???

No, it doesn't work like that, every player needs to have their own color.
If you both have the same color as your preference, it is decided randomly. The log always mentions this at the start of the game.

The reason why you need to have your own color is for communication and replay value. Sometimes people communicate around the table by naming colors, or when you watch the replay from the opponents point of view, that the colors aren't mixed up.

Thanks, good to know that it is not a bug. Although I don’t think many people watch replays and I have never communicated to other players referring to their colors, but that’s just me
