There are actually two types of red thumbs, but only one type of green thumb.
Private red thumbs can be given to people without playing with them, as an indication that you never want to be at the same table as them. However, private red thumbs will not affect their karma in any way.
Public thumbs, on the other hand [pun intended], do affect karma. If a player's ratio of red thumbs to green thumbs is too high, their karma gets capped. Since green thumbs therefore affect more than just the person giving them, you need to actually play with someone to give a green thumb. Just like you need to play with them to give a public red thumb.

Green thumbs are not needed to block someone from something. That's why it doesn't work the same way.
If you like someone, why don't you just play with them? Problem solved

Why is it that Green & Red Thumbs don't work in the same way?
You can give a Red Thumb to a player you have never played with, but you can't give them a Green one.
Private red thumbs are only used to prevent playing with someone. There's no need for a private green thumb to enable playing with someone, because you can already do that by default. So even though it's not called public (because there's only one type), a green thumb has a public effect the way a public red thumb does, and thus it should be based on in-game interactions.
If you are proposing that green thumbs that affect reputation should be allowed with people you haven't played, this could be used by someone to boost their (possibly well-deserved) negative reputation by simply getting a bunch of people to green thumb them for no reason.
If you are proposing that green thumbs that don't affect reputation should be allowed with people you haven't played with, what's the point?

I think you don't get it. Most likely you rack up lots of red thumbs, as I was very surprised that I had given you a red thumb, while never having played you. But then I looked up your history on the forum, and you were one fo the very few people I ever had to red thumb due to certain voiced opinions on the forum I did not agree with.
I'm not surprised you are whining because you get red thumbed often.

I'm not a spokesperson, but this is still a public forum.
Yup, I got moderated twice, once for calling someone butthurt, and another for calling someone else a chessplaying pigeon, both on the forum within the same thread. But none of my comments were removed, so apparantly they weren't that bad. BGA only moderated because they had to, not that they agreed with the person that made the report, as otherwise they would have edited my comments.
Now if you don't like how BGA works with their way of handling red and green thumbs, no one forces you to play here. Lots of other sites where you can do your thing.
