After 20 times playing, I am done with the BGA version

Post by EvanWGF »

I played it 20 times, and I can safely say its broken beyond being able to enjoy the game. The dice generator is totally whacked out. 40-50 minute games, 60-70 rolls per game, and only 5 or6 7's rolled? In what universe does that occur?

Until it gets fixed, I'm done with Catan here. I'll stick to the analog version and deal with rolls that reflect the reality of statistics and probability.

Out of your last ten games, the game with the least sevens rolled was 9, out of 99 rolls in that game, or 9.1% of rolls. None of these games had 5 or 6 rolls of seven.

Over your last ten games, a seven has been rolled for 15.1% of rolls, which is a little lower than the expected 16.7%, but not much lower.

For a game with 100 dice rolls, the average number of sevens should be 17, but the standard deviation is 4, meaning that one in three games will include either 22 or more sevens, or 12 or less sevens. A game of 9 or less sevens rolled would occur once every 40 games - its actually pretty common.

Repost my suggestion (below) - PHP randomness script is not great - (https://boardgamearena.com/faq?anchor=f ... ing_random) Even the explainer they link in the FAQ explains how PHP is not random https://www.random.org/analysis/

I just played yahttzee and we had two first rolls yahtzee with 5 - 1 die rolls in one game and at the beginning of the next game the player that didn't get it in the first game got first time roll yatzhee same number. the probability of rolling yahtzee on the first roll is .077% (https://www.yahtzeemanifesto.com/yahtzee-odds.php) Two days ago I got 4 yahtzee's in one game - that's out of the 13 rolls you take in the game. Odds of getting 3 yahtzees is 1.7%+ of ALL games. You are likely to get a yahtzee 1 time in every 22 rolls.

The psuedo randomness of php is prone to issues
https://stackoverflow.com/questions/235 ... lly-random
When these errors occur they seems to cascade and true randomness suffers

I am suggesting they partner with roll 20 (https://app.roll20.net/home/quantum) or use a system like the random.org folks they cite

I had made this suggestion back in August 2020.

Given how they have grown since 2 years ago they should invest in a true randomness generator of some sort

HAHAHAHAH

Come on guys... The randomness is good enough for a game like Catan. The dice rolls like this will happen in real life as well. Go ahead and roll 2 dice 60-70 times and write down the results. You will very likely get similar distributions very often. Catan is a random game. If you don't like it, play ANY OTHER GAME on the platform.

When it comes to the computer's RNG systems... These issues are negligible when you round up to a 6-sided dice. And here we roll 2 dice too. All the issues about RNGs are only visible when you use the raw values. But when you start rounding, it just does not show or is not connected to the issues that you blame them of.

This keeps coming up and the complainers are those who have no idea of how probabilities work. Just let it go.

this is a demonstrantion of a player who doesn't know statistics and how law of large numbers works.

Yeah but is all random.. some games I have 7 always when I don’t want it.. other games I need a 7 and don’t get it. And other games I got the luck.

Same with 6 or 8. Sometimes got bad luck to guess this become a game with more 6 and then get always an 8 and visa versa..

I think because it is faster and because it is generated that people get a feeling and psychological idea that there is something broken.

Maybe there is a little problem with the randomness but that will be not a problem here..

After playing 50 games, it does seem like something is off. I suspect that the random die generator is not rolling each individual die, but both dice together. Statistically, it may seem right, but the amount of combinations would be much grater.

Also, looking at someone's BGA score and saying if it is low, they don't have a valid argument. That's called a credentials fallacy.

This is confirmation bias. Humans are just flawed in a sense that they tend to notice patterns in real life even if there is none (Jesus on toast etc). Catan is a very random game and if it isn't going your way, you try to find something to blame.
