There are rumors circulating that this is in alpha. Are they true?

What do you mean "rumors" ? Either someone played it, either no one. It's not currently in the list of alpha games so if it was played, it was only in a private alpha group.

Not sure where you have seen this as you don't provide a source, but rumors are only rumors. Easiest thing to do on the internet is start a rumor
Please note that all games with extra rights licensing needs (in addition to the board game itself) are much more complex and thus less likely to happen.
