This is the starting hand so you of course also have a Survey Team (not shown here)

So what do you play ?
a) Alien Toy Shop and keep Investment Credit
b) Alien Toy Shop and keep New Earth
c) Alien Toy Shop + Survey Team
d) Survey Team + one of the green worlds
e) Something else ?

Example 2)
Jump Drive - Start 2

a) Space Symbionts
b) Space Symbionts + Survey
c) Uplifting Mole
d) Uplifting Mole + survey
e) Uplifting Mole + Mining Robot
f) Replicant Robot
g) other ?

What I did:

1b Alien Toy Shop and keep Investment Credit , close call with Alien Toy Shop + Survey Team

2c Just the uplift mole because this makes it possible keep and to play the Uplift Researchers on round 2. 2a, Just the space Symbionts works as well and is a very close call.

I Chose the mole because I'll probably want to play a planet on round 3 to increase my card revenues. With the symbionts, you are almost certain to explore on round 3. In the end, I ended drawing a nice small brown on round 2 and I delayed the Uplift Researchers to round 3. game #295318064

Good examples, I think your choices are great.

For first example I would go 1c instead of 1a but those are very close.

For second example I think 2c is correct, 2a feels like more of a gamble which I could only argue for if I feel that I'm a worse player than the opponent and have to get lucky.

Here is another discussion starter that I found to be harder.

My main choices here were between:
a) Galactic resort (saving Consumer markets)
b) Galactic resort (saving Trade pact)
c) Trade Pact (Throwing away Galactic Trendsetters and Mining Conglomerate)
d) Survey Ship (Throwing away same as above)

I did go with Trade Pact hoping someone else plays an early Trade Pact, they all felt bad to me...

It's just bad hand. Search with "*" for 5- or 6- cost planet cards or play relatively cheap survey team and pray. But with high probability you already lost.

I think I'll go for a and most probably explore on round 2.
In the end, two small points are pushing me in that direction:
* bad card revenue for bad card revenue, I might as well get an early VP start
* If I do end up having to explore on round 2, I at least have a bigger chance to setup a coherent board by round 3 with this choice. Sure, a blue board isn't all that appealing anyway but it's better than a rainbow one (everything else being equal).

I tend to avoid exploring on round 1 but maybe that's a mistake...

Case 4.
Now, this is a dream start, it would be a shame to lose this game.
So what do you do ?
a) Play the Comet Zone (brown one) and keep Space Symbionts
b) Play the Comet Zone (brown one) and keep the Alien Toy Shop
c) Something less smart

-------------------------------------
From game #298487989

You should obviously play a world with a revenue of 3.
You also clearly don't want to play the Survey team because it is way better to be certain to have a very good card to play on round 2.
Playing just one cost 3 world lets you keep one other.
Delaying so you can play all 3 good cards is just silly, you want revenue immediately.

You can play the symbionts if you want but it is assuredly better to play a big revenue on round 1 and the symbionts on round 2 rather than the opposite.
The brown world is also clearly slightly better than the alien one. That is because the alien one has combo value with only 1 card : the "alien tech institute" and even that combo is somewhat problematic as other players playing it could also get an advantage from your alien world. So the Brown is better.

So the remaining question is what to keep ?
I chose a) and kept the Symbionts which I ended playing in round 2 to help with the end game but there is certainly a case to be made to keep the alien world.
