Only played few games, but I think buying trees is the most efficient way to win.
Is that true? Any way to counter this strategy?

I've played 4 times (in person and on BGA), and the flame tokens have won 3 times, and the buying trees once

i have arround 1000 games now and i win by flames arround 65% of the time and 30% trees

i think the number of players is important.
With 2 players the flames wins mostly. With 3 and 4 players, the trees are most efficient.

What does it mean to buy 12 different trees? How are they different? Colour?

They're in different places in the tree nursery. And you don't have to buy 12 different trees, just have 12 points from trees (some of which may come from tree tokens).

Sorry, but wrong statement : you MAY buy couples of trees of the same kind, but each pair counts as one in the trees total points !
