Losing players leave the game during playing

Post by Hexerin »

You take the time to play Catan, and then another player simply drops out in the middle of the game because he will probably lose. That's unfair to the other players. I noticed that especially with Catan, and also that there are many players who have a bad reputation. This is annoying and sometimes I wonder if I should even play the game anymore on BGA :(
If a player quits more often or abandons a game, he should be excluded.

Which is why quitting reduces karma, so you can filter out those players.

When a player quits, they lose reputation points, so a player who does this a few times is going to have very low reputation for a long time, until they play a lot of games _without_ quitting.

When you create a table, you can set a reputation filter to exclude players with low reputations, and that would exclude those who have been quitting games with any frequency.

When you join tables created by other people, you can see the reputation scores of the players already at the table, and also whether the table has a filter for reputation. You can choose to never join any tables that allow low reputation players, or just wait for tables that have only one spot open, and only join if the other players there have high reputations.

Even if you point is completely valid (players dropping out on purpose are a real nuisance and reduce the fun of playing by a lot), you should stick to the correct numbers. From your last 25 games only 2 have not finished regularly, from your last 50 games it were 4. That is not a 1 in 3 ratio!

As you seem to like 3-player games and Arena is 3-player at the moment you could play Arena instead of regular games. Less players drop out in Arena, in my experience. Other than that there is no real solution to the problem, unfortunately.

Perhaps there should be a mechanism for resigning in Catan. It can be very boring to have to play out an hour long game from a terrible position that has no hope of winning.

Playing through the game is a common board game etiquette thing. Just play it through and try your best. You will find that you can learn much more when playing in tight situations.

This is a bit of a dismissive response. Even the best player can end up in an unwinnable game where there are no meaningful actions. There's nothing to learn there for them by playing it out. And the interface does not let you pass gracefully. It requires constant active engagement. Combine that with slow players and it's a needlessly aggravating experience.

You still play to the end. As a winning player it also will suck if someone else just quits and doesn't let you enjoy playing through the game.

Often players give up too soon. They don't see a path to win when there still is a way.

Otherwise people would just keep giving up 1-2 turns before someone makes the final winning move. That is not a fun way to end games.

Basic online gaming etiquette. You let other players enjoy the game so that you can also enjoy the game when the roles are reversed.
