can anyone help me understand this better, i've looked for 'betterment' in the rules and i am struggling

Hum no, betterment means you get a better coin than the one that you should have because the coin is not here.
For example, you trade a coin for the 12 coin but the slot is empty so you take the next one available, that's a betterment.
