Quick rules question.

I have both Pet Lover and Animal Dealer in play, but don't have any food. When I now use an animal action space with a single animal I thought I could use the Pet Lover first to get an animal 3 food and 1 grain and then use the food from the Pet Lover to activate Animal dealer. However the interface didn't give me this option. Am I wrong in the rules interpretation or is this a bug?

Animal Dealer, like every other card that says "when you use ____", must be activated before taking the effects of that action space

Pet Lover's effect happens after taking the effects of the action space (either leave it there for the bonus or not.)
