Wingspan: Beginners Guide

Post by The_Board_Gamer »

I recently wrote a strategy guide for Wingspan based on a lot of the things I learned here and just thought I'd share a quick overview for anyone wanting to get in the game :D

Early-Game Strategy

The early game of Wingspan is all about getting your engine going. You want to build up your resource base so you can take on more challenging goals in the mid and late game. Here are some tips to get you started:

1. Analyse end-of-round goals

The end-of-round goals are critical to your overall strategy. At the start of the game, take the time to analyse each of these goals carefully. This will help you determine what habitats and birds to focus on during the early game.

2. Prioritize brown- and pink-power birds

Brown- and pink-power birds are incredibly useful in the early game, as they can help you generate additional cards, food, and eggs. You’ll want to play these birds as soon as possible to take full advantage of their powers.

3. Plan your first few turns

Ideally, you should plan out your first few turns based on the end-of-round goals and the birds in your hand. This will help you make the most of your limited actions and resources.

Mid-Game Strategy

In the mid-game, your engine should be up and running, and you should be ready to start taking on more challenging goals. Here are some tips to help you succeed:

4. Check your opponents’ boards

You should be routinely checking your opponents’ boards to see what goals they are working towards. This will help you determine which remaining goals you have a realistic chance of winning and what resources you need to prioritize.

5. Keep your engine running

Your engine is your key to success in the mid and late game. Make sure you are taking actions that help you generate the resources you need to achieve your goals.

6. Play the long game

Don’t get too caught up in short-term goals. Sometimes it’s better to invest in resources that will pay off later in the game. Consider the long-term impact of each action you take and make sure you are positioning yourself for success in the later rounds.

End-Game Strategy

The end-game is where you’ll need to make your final push for victory. Here are some tips to help you achieve success:

7. Focus on end-of-round and end-of-game goals

In the end-game, your primary focus should be on achieving the end-of-round and end-of-game goals. Make sure you are positioning yourself to score as many points as possible during these final rounds.

8. Pay attention to bonus cards

Bonus cards can be a game-changer in the end-game. Make sure you are taking actions that align with your bonus cards and maximize their value.

9. Don’t forget about eggs

Eggs may seem like a less valuable resource, but they can be a key factor in the end-game. Make sure you are collecting eggs throughout the game so you can score points in the final rounds.
