Meadows? Old vs. new rules

What is the difference? I have the old physical version bought in 2001.
The player with the highest influence/farmers gets 3 points for every town on the meadow.
E.g. player 1 has 2 farmers on a meadow with 3 towns...he gets 3x3 = 9 points.
Player 2 has 1 farmer on a meadow with 3 towns...and gets nothing because player 1 has more farmers.
The German rules only mention "You get 3 points for every town" but don't talk about influence...
What is the exact difference between the two rules you can choose when starting a game?

You have got these versions on BGA (as given in the game options):
a) "Each completed city is worth 3 points to the player with the most farmers surrounding the city (First edition rules)"
b) "Each field is worth 3 points per adjacent completed city (International rules)"
The difference is this: If one city belongs to two fields and you have the majority on both of the fields, with a) you will score the city only once (score per city), with b) you will score it twice (score per field).

One can add to cigmas comments:
Option a) is city-centered, thus at the end of the game one focusses on each finished city at a time and considers all fields that share a border with this city.
Option b) however is field-centered, thus at the end of the game one focusses on each finished field at a time and considers all finished cities that share a border with this field.
Please note that with option a) you can win the points for a city even if you lose all majority-battles in the fields.
Let's say you are red and some finished city is bordering to 3 fields that have meeples on them.
Field1: 2 blue, 1 red meeples
Field2: 2 green, 1 red meeples
Field3: 2 yellow, 1 blue, 1 red meeples
In total there are 3 blue, 3 red, 2 green, 2 yellow meeples, thus blue and red will get the 3 points for this city.

I didn’t know the difference either (and I’ve played over 1000x

).
