I play turn based living forest and the rules for coming in 2nd-4th completely changed. I only noticed because I had a game in which I would’ve been second place by a long shot with the previous rules but noticed I took a massive elo hit so decided to look into it (I came in last) When I went to the bug page I noticed it was already reported by another player and ruled not a bug.

Recently the site added an expansion for this game (I was playing the base version). In the comments under the bug someone stated that the rulebook isn’t clear about the conditions for 2nd-4th and that the rule change was to coincide with the expansion. I don’t know how true any of this is but shouldn’t there at least be a message at the top of games stating that the rules will be changed for a game that’s been on this site for a long time and was following a different set of rules?

I followed the exact same path. But the dev is right, rules almost never say how to rank players, rules just say who wins.
So ranking amongst losers is BGA thing and dev can decide (or publisher, if he's involved).
Yet I agree a small message saying tie-èbreak has changed would avoid more players to follow the same patch as we did
