I've tried to start a game twice now. It starts the countdown. Then no game?

Same here. But I can't play any game solo.

Me too. It was giving me trouble yesterday, but I managed to play a couple of games before it failed again. What's the problem?

I don't know if this is the reason, but when I can't get into Solo mode I don't see the option to switch to training mode.

WORKAROUND:
It seems, solo games are still working in the old lobby.

Go to "Play now", then change from "Automatic" to "Manual" on the top of the page if necessary. When you create the table, first switch from "normal mode" to "training mode". Then reduce the player number to 1.

This was a site-wide issue. I understand it has been resolved (I think? I haven't verified), but it was never anything specific to It's a Wonderful World.
