Can't give a red thumb due to it being the players 'first game'

Why do I keep getting this popup?

I'm in a game with a couple of people who are way over their time limit, but I see no reason to quit the game, however they should be punished with a red thumb. They've both got dozens of games under their belts, they aren't new players. Why won't it let me red thumb them for taking too long to play?

You can always give someone a private red thumb by going to their profile page. You don't even have to have played with them.

When you say "They've both got dozens of games under their belts," do you mean they have played that specific game dozens of times? If so, I have read before that training games do not count as your "first game." If you mean they've played other games dozens of times, "first game" doesn't mean your first game on BGA, it means your first time playing that specific game. The principle being that in your first game you may not know the rules, interface, etc. and will be given some slack.

It's Carcassonne, they've played many Carcassonne games beforehand.

Do the various Carcassonne variants count as a different "game"?

If they are beginners (ELO = 0 for the specific game) you can set up your parameters so that you don't play with them. If they are not beginners and you still get the message then you can report the bug (or vote for a report if one already exists).

I've had this message a bunch of times in different games with people with ELO over 1 in that game. It happens sometimes when they finish other games while yours (their first game) is ongoing. But sometimes, it's an actual bug.

An easy solution would be just to allow red thumbs even for beginners at a specific game. They already get double the time, so if they are still slow, or quit without explanation, or haven't even read the rules before starting, I think a red thumb is justified.

You can't give a red thumb to anyone you're currently playing. You'll be able to red thumb once the game ends regardless of whether or not it was their first game.

I don't think it helps to red thumb a new player like that. It's "anti-communication" if you don't talk and just punish.

Even if you're impatient and don't want to help them actually play faster (by giving them some tips, for example), you should better to tell them at the end of the game: "Hey guy, I know it was your first game, but your moves were pretty slow. Don't worry, you'll get better after a few games. You might join/create tables with at slow speed, so you have more time each turn (or even use the training mode to get rid of the timer) until you're more comfortable with the game."

Go look at the profile. These are not new players. They have ELOs of 100 in the exact version of Carcassonne being played.

The trouble is you have to wait until the game is over to give the red thumb. There will be an option at the end of the game.

This game promotes anti-communication. Honestly, some players will give you a red thumb for absolutely nothing. It's better to avoid chat entirely.
