What's the point of the "Ready" step in-between rounds?

I play turn-based with a couple friends and this "I'm Ready" step seems completely unnecessary and ends up slowing us down. (it only happens a couple times a game, but still...
I'm wondering if there's actually a purpose, besides a quick review of the previous round? Is it possible to skip that extra "turn" and just... Maybe put a link to it somewhere in the board?
