How do you use cards that grant resource bonuses

I paid for the Civ card that gives two resources of choice. I'm about to build a building and need to cash this card in to get the resources for the build, but the interface doesn't seem to be letting me do this. How do I actually get the resources from this card?

Just click on the any resource icon on your player board.

I found there is the "any resource" icon shown next to the other resources. You can click on it and select which resources you want. However, you have to select both resources at once. I had a situation where I needed only one, and would have liked to save the second "joker" for a later time. But when checking the rules for this card they explicitly say that you "cash in" the whole card, i.e. both resources together.
