Line of sight question

I'm pretty new and still getting the occasional surprise on line of sight.. would anyone have a look and let me know what I'm missing?
Turn 272 in this game:
https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=388465857
Two ski troops activated, move to F5, d6, hoping to each get a shot off at the tank on E5. F5 attacks tank E5, which retreats to e4.
I was expecting that ski troop d6 could shoot at e4. Two hexes away (within range), in a straight line, so hex E5 would be the only potential obstruction, but it's a frozen river which does not break LOS. But, only the infantry on D5 was available as a target
Any ideas?

And it was not a case of close combat right ?

Ah, this was the reason. I was forced to attack the close combat target instead. Almost 20 games deep and I did not know this rule

See Base Game rulebook p. 8 : "A unit adjacent to an enemy unit must Close Assault this unit if it chooses to battle. It may not
fire on another, more distant, enemy unit instead."
You may also want to check the rules about "Line of Sight" on p. 9 of that same rulebook. These too are often misunderstood.
