I admit.. I get distracted by real life sometimes… dogs, people, phone calls… I try to get back to a game as quick as possible, only to find that the losing player expelled me as soon as they could…is it really to quicken the game? Or are they just capitalizing on a way to avoid the loss… I think the karma penalties should be adjusted based on time delayed or score at time of being kicked out … there should be a way to moderate that.

Well, the tide can turn quite quickly in some games, even if you think there's no way you could lose... so trying to find a definitive way to score people according to who's winning might prove impossible in some games. Do you ask them to wait for you to come back? Do they still ignore you and kick you anyway? Sorry if that happens. Some people are rude- but some people have valid reasons why they really can't take longer in a game as well- it's all a hard minefield to navigate. Life is hard.

Life can be hard (illness, starvation, dictatorship, war,...). But not because you kick someone or you get kicked.

Time constraints are a "rule" at BGA, and anyone is allowed to expel a player in red for whatever reason. It may be frustrating and rude, but it's not wrong to expel other players. It's also not wrong to red-thumb other player for whatever reason (like expelling you, or being too slow).

Capitalizing on an error in strategy due to distractions is not the same as expelling someone from a game because you’re losing… esp when there are other options.. withdraw from game or revert to turn-based, etc. However, I do appreciate the point in the second paragraph.

If you just stop playing how do I know you will EVER be back? I will expel you

Communication, of course.

When you start a game, you commit to a time frame. If you can't meet it, just let people know. Most people will be accommodating.

If you don't meet a commitment and your fellow players have no expectation that you'll start meeting it anytime soon, it only makes sense that they'll pull the plug.

So other players are sitting there waiting........ waiting...... waiting...... in bored silence. Not like IRL where there is interaction with others, but alone with dead air all around. It is very rude to do what you do. Play turn based if you can't honor your commitment to play your turn on time. Use the button to ask to change to turn based. It is not fair to ask a stranger sitting somewhere else on the planet to sit in bored silence for an unknown amount of time while you live your life. Especially if you do this more than once a game. I would boot, too.

I really like that claim.

I post some months ago my weak opinion (ie something I could totally see myself change over time) on this forum post: https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27216 (sixth post of first page), and it look like it make many people react to it, which I was expecting since I don't believe the answer is trivial.

I stay on my opinion though atm, you can imagine a line of behaviour going from the extreme 'I will do something in game rules to annoy slightly another player' to 'I will expell someone else 21 seconds out of time even if he said he came back in 30s', and everyone will be somewhere in the line.
While being in the left of the line prone (too much) not annoying others players and try to maximise fun for everyone ;
being in the right of the line prone (too much) playing competively and maximising elo.

And funny enough, you can find people in both extremes.

I really don't get the issue. You sign up for a game with a specific set of time rules. If you can't manage to keep up, you say something in chat. At that point, you're at the mercy of your opponent(s) but since most people are essentially good, you'll likely be fine.

On the other hand, if you're playing an opportunistic a-hole, then you lose. Mind you, this whole issue began when YOU failed to uphold the arrangement, so...

I haven't played a RT game here, but when I've done so on other platforms, I never did unless I was quite sure that I was free for the next hour or so. Sure, things happen. But, in order for this to be a big enough problem to complain about, a lot of things need to line up.

1) something unexpected has to happen that makes it so you can't play in time
2) the person needs to be rude enough to boot you despite you saying something
3) you need to be winning at the time

Sorry, but if all those things happen enough that you're here complaining about it, then maybe you're trying to squeeze in RT games more often than you actually have time to do so. Turn based is great for those of us who don't want to commit to a game like that.
