#12 - Solo Challenge [August 2023] ENDED

Post by montybojangles »

The August solo challenge is now active. It is to play the Hadsch Hallas versus the automa of the month, the Terrans (you must select the 'Automa of the month' button), on the Fixed map. Check that the seed in the automa score panel is 16908912. It is important that you read the Rules section for more details, especially if the seed is not 16908912.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this challenge is for you. The goal is simple: have fun and get a high score in solo mode. Thanks to the BGA set-up, you can easily compare your score, watch replays of games and learn different ways of playing a faction. (There's more guidance on how to view replays at/near the end of the May challenge.) Play serenely at your leisure: there is no timer pressure!

In the July challenge pepealas truly harnessed the power of the Taklons, with a mammoth 285 VP topping the lists - congratulations! Kespie ran that score close, with djchadb, bunnie and snyggis 2003 completing the elite. Well done all those who took part, including Brent_F on a first victory.

There's elite rank for the top 5 players and cadet rank for everyone else.

  • Chessmaster Hex 188 vs Automächtig 160 - https://boardgamearena.com/9/gaiaprojec ... =403454034 - economy pretty fast to level 4 and navigation to level 2. In the End I went for economy 5, navigation and AI 4 and both special tech from economy (for 16 pts) and navigation (for 12 pts).

1st step: Create a new table. Select Training or Friendly mode and Fixed map. Choose 1 player/Solo and click on Start game. Select the red box Automa of the month (Terrans).
2nd step: Select the difficulty you think you can handle.
3rd step: Select the faction Hadsch Hallas. Check that the seed is 16908912 (in the player score panel). If it isn't, start again using the alternative starting method (below).
4th step: Play the game. Post your score(s), mentioning the chosen difficulty (see the format below).

Alternative starting method: Start the game with Fixed map selected >> Choose the Terrans faction card (as you would for a normal game) >> Set the custom seed (16908912 for this challenge), which is next to the heading 'Choose Automa Difficulty Level', and Select the Automa difficulty >> Choose Hadsch Hallas.

Players usually insert the link of their game (you can find it on your profile – tab (x) games played) and mention which tech tracks and other actions have been crucial for them (e.g. Economy, aiming for advanced tech tile on AI).

Ideally, use this format: YourNickname Score vs AutomaLevel Score – LinkOfTheGame – Techs focus – YourComment (e.g. : Marcus Aurelius 222 vs Ultoma 165 – www.boardgamearena.com/game=12345 – focus on Science and Terraforming until mid-game, with aim of taking advanced tile on Terraforming).

Have fun!

Dr_Kruvajan 122 vs Automa (Ultoma Level) 174
Techs focus: Economy, QIC

This was my first time doing the solo challenge, went for a higher difficulty, and got crushed! It's an interesting challenge. It's difficult to keep up with the different planet type goal, but I still don't think I would focus on the terraforming track if I did it a second time.

Just because I'm curious, what is the automata of the week challenge?

Thank you for trying it and being the first to post a score; I hope you are not put off, and have another try. It is probably one of the more tricky challenges.

There's not an organised weekly challenge like this monthly one. However, the 'Automa of the month' and 'Automa of the week' work in the same way. Each uses a seeding system to set up the same tech tile, round booster, end game scoring and automa deck across all three map types and difficulty levels. That means players can have repeat attempts at playing the same or different factions against the automa using a consistent set-up. The monthly 'Solo challenge' was created by Marcus Aurelius to take advantage of that so players could compare scores and ideas.

It's well worth trying out the 'seed' option using the 'Alternative starting method' described in the first post: you can use a seed from any GP game.

sjaster 153 vs Automächtig 160 - https://boardgamearena.com/5/gaiaprojec ... =403172964 - focused on PI and putting all trading stations on the board early on.

Puhh definitely a tricky one, managed to have 102 vs 102 before end game scoring, but the automa beat me in research. :D
Definitely gonna give it another shot!

Theraptscallion 77 vs. Automa 145 - https://boardgamearena.com/6/gaiaprojec ... =403210172 - First automa game. Startled at its seeming infinite resources. Focused on getting all my trading posts out but got cornered by the time it happened.

Chessmaster Hex 151 vs Automächtig 163 https://boardgamearena.com/9/gaiaprojec ... =403437507# (First Automa Game for me too, I guess I should read up the rules on how it acts ;) )
In the beginning I brought economy on level 2 and then researched terraforming to the top level (without aiming for the blue tech). I build my main building in round 2 and basicly skipped on gaia planets. In the end I got research on terraforming and economy maxed (+Points for Trading Posts reasearched) and AI on level 4.
Some cruicial mistakes cost me the game, in the last round I fell 2 Workers short of building a mine and getting the third alliance. I would have gotten that and more points in the sattelite scoring, if I expanded smarter.

Overall the map is so bad for hadsh halla, that already the starting position felt to me like I only had one good space for my mine.

Alright, regame time :).

Chessmaster_Hex 188 vs Automächtig 160 https://boardgamearena.com/9/gaiaprojec ... =403454034

Since the automa beat me on different planets last time even though I researched terraforming and had everything but blue and black I skipped this track basicly entirely this time.
I pushed economy pretty fast to level 4 and navigation to level 2. In the End I went for economy 5, navigation and AI 4 and both special tech from economy (for 16 pts) and navigation (for 12 pts). Navigation didn´t feel too good, there is not a whole lot of planets within 2 spaces that can easily be terraformed, but the 12 pts were nice.
Appart from that I tried to score all round bonusses as good as possible (36 in Sum) and made some good points with the round-boosters (28 in Sum)

Maybe economy + research + AI Track would be best with AI providing the nessecary flight-reach?! This might score for 31 with the special techs and provide some very good reasearchtrack score.
