Tie Breaker Answer Issues

We just had a game where SCIENCEFICTION was the clue (disregarding the annoying combining two words into one word issue I have, they did the same thing for OUTERSPACE!), and our game ended in a tie, which lead to us having to guess the word. My team guessed SCIFI as the word and the game marked it as wrong. Should this have been marked as a correct guess? The intent was there, and the word guessed is a recognizable shortened form of the actual word with almost no wiggle room to confuse it with something else.
The opposing team guessed SPACE for OUTERSPACE and the game marked it as incorrect also, but that seems further from the correct guess than ours. I do recognize the intention is there, though it lacks the precision of a correct answer.
Thoughts?

The tiebreak system is not ideal. As you say, it only accepts perfect spelling and doesn't allow for any nuance.
Better would be a system like Just One where players vote to accept and reject suggestions. Of course this raises its own issues when it decides a contest, but most people play Decrypto for the fun, not for the ELO.

We have similar problems of misspelling in the french version (
https://boardgamearena.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31599) . Some have been solved (
https://boardgamearena.com/bug?id=93904) but I suspect there are other ones left

There was also a time that my team guessed one word correctly but the other team had three. For some reason, the game concluded that it was a tie. They had perfect spelling by the way.
I think it would be better to just let the players manually check and agree on a game result.
