#13 - Solo Challenge [September 2023] ENDED

Post by montybojangles »

It's time for solo challenge No. 13. How lucky - and skilled - will you be? Play the Firaks versus the automa of the month, the Hadsch Hallas (you must select the 'Automa of the month' button), on the Fixed map. Check that the seed in the automa score panel is 16935696. It is important that you read the Rules section for more details, especially if the seed is not 16935696.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this challenge is for you. The goal is simple: have fun and get a high score in solo mode. Thanks to the BGA set-up, you can easily compare your score, watch replays of games and learn different ways of playing a faction. (There's more guidance on how to view replays at/near the end of the May challenge.) Play serenely at your leisure: there is no timer pressure!

Thank you to everyone who shared their scores and thoughts in the August competition, especially those trying the solo challenge for the first time. Pepeleas - who topped the lists again - and kespie did a great job of exploring scoring opportunities. Shout-outs to Heraklejski for posting a winning Ultoma game and to LupinePrototype for an early score that made the elite.

There's elite rank for the top 5 players and cadet rank for everyone else.

1st step: Create a new table. Select Training or Friendly mode and Fixed map. Choose 1 player/Solo and click on Start game. Select the red box Automa of the month (Hadsch Hallas).
2nd step: Select the difficulty you think you can handle.
3rd step: Select the faction Firaks. Check that the seed is 16935696 (in the player score panel). If it isn't, start again using the alternative starting method (below).
4th step: Play the game. Post your score(s), mentioning the chosen difficulty (see the format below).

Alternative starting method: Start the game with Fixed map selected >> Choose the Hadsch Hallas faction card (as you would for a normal game) >> Set the custom seed (16935696 for this challenge), which is next to the heading 'Choose Automa Difficulty Level', and Select the Automa difficulty >> Choose Firaks.

Players usually insert the link of their game (you can find it on your profile – tab (x) games played) and mention which tech tracks and other actions have been crucial for them (e.g. Economy, aiming for advanced tech tile on AI).

Ideally, use this format: YourNickname Score vs AutomaLevel Score – LinkOfTheGame – Techs focus – YourComment (e.g. : Marcus Aurelius 222 vs Ultoma 165 – www.boardgamearena.com/game=12345 – focus on Science and Terraforming until mid-game, with aim of taking advanced tile on Terraforming).

And don't forget to have fun!

John Leo 175 v Automa 126.

Early science advancements. Never acquired advanced tech or built academies. Used PI ability nearly every round.

Not sure how high the ceiling is here. Felt like I had a lot of awkward spacing for my trading posts.

First time playing as the Firaks and I definitely made a couple mistakes that cost me points (I always forget the material caps in the digital version). Fun challenge.

First time playing Firaks, first time playing against the Automa
3 feds, gaia project to 6, nav to 5
Used up all my mines and TPs so that became the limiting factor
Lots of inefficiencies but snuck by with a victory

Significantly better this time.
Took a completely different path.
2 feds, terraforming and science to 6, nav and AI to 5
Made much better use of round scoring opportunities, and overall focused on research

3 Feds, initial focus on economy, then Nav/science, Gaia from Rd4, then AI and Terraforming in the last round. Advanced techs from Gaia and science.

It was my first run-through, so I’m sure there are loads of inefficiencies that could be ironed out. The pivot to Gaia was more of a reaction to what the Automa took away than a plan from the outset. In hindsight it would have been an excellent plan to begin with.

It’s not a faction I’ve tried that much so thanks for the challenge. Their ability to charge up any research track at will is really quite fun.

My first attempt, from yesterday, just after setting the challenge:
montybojangles 149 vs Automa 126 - https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=413348132 - RL+TS+M, econ then a bit of everything.

Thank you everyone for posting scores.

For that alone, it was worth choosing them as the challenge :D . They are probably my favourite faction, though you might not guess it from my score.

I like your taking of 3 knowledge in rd 3 and placing of the lost planet.

52 for round bonuses certainly makes up for the lack of scoring boosters!

Welcome back to the solo challenge. Skilfully done! Rd 4 and 6 bonuses for TS are great for Firaks and it's now clear how complementing that with gaiaforming for the advanced tiles for TS and Gaia planets is a very strong strategy.

jeffdorsey01 157 vs Automa 126 - https://boardgamearena.com/6/gaiaprojec ... =413894704 - I started very slow but plowed into Science and Economy to hope for an explosive late game. Never built to academies - mostly kept bouncing the same research lab back to trading post with the special ability and then upgrading it the same round, mostly attempting to prioritize income tech tiles.

Felt like the map really lent itself to using the Gaia Planet -> 3 VP tile and got quite a few points off of that - it's not usually a tile I take!

Built economy first this time, which turned out to be significantly better
Still have way too many inefficiencies and a couple of legit mistakes, so there's room to grow
I didn't even use gaia projects this time, which I think is another untapped source of points for the next run.
