Just a question out of curiosity; New games start usually with 3 oder 5 players. It is very uncommon in my personal experience, to find a game with 4 players. Is Caylus considered broken with four, or is there any other valid reason I have not yet discovered?

Not that I’m aware of. In fact, while BGG’s poll lists 3-player as the best player count, 4-player is voted as the second best player count, with 5-player as the worst player count.

If wanting to mix things up, you could always change your preferred setting to 4-player only for a game or two.

it just takes longer to get a 4 player game. Many players just don't like the wait time.
