About Tiger Tanks

I'm a bit perplexed. Battling against a Tiger, how come sometimes they react to a flag (they retreat). But when they have no retreat path, they simply ignore any flag result? Or is it just me? It surely seems that when I attack a tiger, thy do not retreat. But when my opponent attacks my Tiger, they are in full retreat?

Tigers can be confusing, especially if you only go by what the computer does, seeming to randomly roll dice. However, it isn't random and this is how it works.
When dice are rolled against any unit, first hits are scored then flags are taken. With Tiger tanks a hit has to be confirmed before the flags are taken. The way this is done is by taking the hits you would normally score against an armor unit (tanks or grenades, and flags if retreat is blocked). Then you reroll all the hits, needing at least one grenade for the kill, ignoring all other results. If in the initial attack roll a flag was rolled, then you take the flag.
An example, you attack a tiger tank who has the ability to retreat, rolling three dice. You roll 1 infantry one armor, one flag. First you take care of the hits, which is one hit. You have to reroll the one die that hit, needing a grenade to confirm the hit and get the kill. If you do not get the grenade for the kill, you then take the flag and retreat one hex.
Another example, you roll three dice against a trapped tiger tank, getting 1 tank, 1 grenade and 1 flag. Because he can't retreat, the flag counts as a hit. You get to reroll three dice, hoping for 1 grenade to confirm the hit and get the kill.
So, to sum up, the flags must be taken if rolled in the initial attack roll. However, if flags are rolled in the confirmation roll they have no effect since the only thing you're looking for are grenades.
