Could players choose their cards all at the same time?

Hi,

I'm playing Heat games in turn-based mode, and I'm wondering whether players could choose their cards (steps 1 and 2 of the rule book) all at the same time, in parallel. The rules seem to allow this, and I guess it would speed up the game significantly.

Am I missing something here?

Thanks,
VKV

Pretty sure this is already the case. Everyone plays their cards at once and then in turn order they move their car.

As Shagoosty mentioned, this is exactly what's happening.

Everyone does steps 1/2 simultaneously, then when everyone is finished the player in front does the rest of their turn, then the 2nd player, and so on.

Their choice isn't revealed until it's their turn to start step 3+, though, so maybe that is how you're missing it? You should see the hourglass "thinking" symbol by multiple players names, though, while you're doing your step 1/2 (unless you're always really slow and everyone else has finished before you).

Yes, you are right, my bad.

But then again, in a turnbased game you very rarely do choose them at the same time, even if you can... Just saying. So it speeds up the game a little, but a lot more in real time games.

Uh ? It's actually primordial in turn-based games with many players.

The point isn't whether you can play at the exact same time as someone else, the point is whether you have to wait for others to have played their turn before you can play yours and vice-versa.

Games like railroad ink, jump drive, race for the galaxy, 7 wonders, Welcome to, etc... would take a lot more time in turn-based mode if everyone had to play in a specific order. I rarely play a game with 5 or more players if it doesn't allow at least partial simultaneous play. A turn based game without simultaneous play will be horribly slow if two of the players only log once a day at different times.

For additional speedup, it is theoretically possible in a game like Heat, that the initial player(s) in current turn order could move their car(s) before later players have selected their cards (because those card selections do not affect play options for the leading cars). This could help streamline various situations that slow games down because of overlapping downtime in the players' schedules. The trick would be concealing such "jump the gun" moves from any players who haven't completed their card selection. I don't know if anything like that has been implemented on BGA, but it seems that it would require a bit of coding trickery that goes beyond the standard architecture.

What I feel is lacking is the possibility to change your cards while not all the players have their choice locked in. It doesn't add time, but you might have overlooked something or made a mistake and your are now just waiting for the other players to make their decision.

That is possible, at least in turn-based Heat for card selection. If the other player moves are not all in, you can cancel and make a different selection.

Preselection seems like much more easier than the "hide and reveal" alternative that have been discussed before, we will give it a try.
I am not sure if it's that good though because it sounds like you want to know where are others when planning your turn quite often during the race.

Completely possible : just click the "Cancel" button.
