#15 - Solo Challenge [November 2023] ENDED

Post by montybojangles »

Your challenge is to play the Itars versus the automa of the month, the Xenos (select the 'Automa of the month' button), on the Random map. Check that the seed in the automa score panel is 16988400. It is important that you read the Rules section for more details, especially if the seed is not 16988400.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this challenge is for you. The goal is simple: have fun and get a high score in solo mode. Thanks to the BGA set-up, you can easily compare your score, watch replays of games and learn different ways of playing a faction. (There's more guidance on how to view replays at/near the end of the May challenge.) Play serenely at your leisure: there is no timer pressure!

Thanks to you all for taking part; it's nice to see some newcomers to the monthly challenge. Well done to kespie for being this month's champion, while LupinePrototype, danuer13, Nigator and Officer Krispy all got very high scores.

There's elite rank for the top 5 players and cadet rank for everyone else.

1st step: Create a new table. Select Training or Friendly mode and Random map. Choose 1 player/Solo and click on Start game. Select the red box Automa of the month (Xenos).
2nd step: Select the difficulty you think you can handle.
3rd step: Select the faction Itars. Check that the seed is 16988400 (in the player score panel). If it isn't, start again using the alternative starting method (below).
4th step: Play the game. Post your score(s), mentioning the chosen difficulty (see the format below).

Alternative starting method: Start the game with Random map selected >> Choose the Xenos faction card (as you would for a normal game) >> Set the custom seed (16988400 for this challenge), which is next to the heading 'Choose Automa Difficulty Level', and Select the Automa difficulty >> Choose Itars.

Players usually insert the link of their game (you can find it on your profile – tab (x) games played) and mention which openings, tech tracks and other actions have been crucial for them (e.g. RL+2M. Economy, aiming for advanced tech tile on AI).

Ideally, use this format: YourNickname Score vs AutomaLevel Score – LinkOfTheGame – Techs focus – YourComment (e.g.: Marcus Aurelius 222 vs Ultoma 165 – www.boardgamearena.com/game=12345 – focus on Science and Terraforming until mid-game, with aim of taking advanced tile on Terraforming).

And don't forget to have fun!

Where to start? Planetary Institute or Academy? There are lots of early decisions to make. I hope you enjoy this month's challenge.

My very messy first attempt (ok strictly I first did three turns on Automa level and didn't like that :D) :
kespie 224 vs 126 Automachtig - https://boardgamearena.com/4/gaiaprojec ... =434837969 - Ac opening, up eco, PI in round 2, then doing a little of everything (Gaia, Terra, Nav). Got the Gaia adv tech for 20 vp but I think there are better alternatives. Science, as always...

Somewhat better:
kespie 242 vs 129 Automachtig - https://boardgamearena.com/7/gaiaprojec ... =435034047 - PI opening, up Sci, Ac round 3, then mainly Terra and eventually up all tracks except Eco. Three advanced techs (65 vp total from techs), but not enough qic actions and maybe missed some round scoring.

Now with Ac opening again:
kespie 255 vs 129 Automachtig - https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=436723375 - Ac +2M opening, up Sci, PI in round 2, two Gaiaformers, then up Terra/AI/Nav

My attempt opening PI, plus advancing gaia and nav.

montybojangles 171 vs Automa 124 - https://boardgamearena.com/8/gaiaprojec ... =435323062 - Missed an easy 4VP in round 6 by advancing terra for 2 ore instead of AI for 2 qic :( .

kespie 243 vs 129 Automachtig ... This one has some more potential left in the end game, I placed a useless blue mine and forgot to take 2q action in time, so can easily become 250+.
Great scores posted. I've given up forecasting likely VPs but I had not expected 250, even though there are several strong advanced techs. Getting 3+1 feds in round 5 was well done. As always, thanks for posting.

Kespie, that's an impressive improvement.

An interesting game: a high score without gaiaforming.

First attempt, also first time playing Itars.
https://boardgamearena.com/10/gaiaproje ... =438097087
jgpaladin 199 - Automa 128
PI opening, focused early on gaia projects, but was too scattered in my tech adancements. Finished with only 32 points from tech track, nothing advanced to the top. 3 advanced techs plus all but one of the regular techs. But I couldn't manage to properly time it to get the bonus federation token on the terraforming track, which I think was part of my leaving too many points on the table. I'll be surprised if I can't improve this by 20ish points without making any major changes.

On Automa level I can get at least to 267. Couldn't get the start right easily though - the PI in round 2 is harder to manage with less passive power coming in:
kespie 267 vs 121 Automa - https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=438320276 - Ac opening, up Sci, PI in round 2, then up Gaia/Nav/Terra/AI

Better version:
kespie 277 vs 121 Automa - https://boardgamearena.com/7/gaiaprojec ... =438502767 - Ac opening, up Sci, PI in round 2, then up Gaia/Nav/Terra/AI. Focus on the 2Q action.

An excellent score! I hope you found them interesting. I see you took the 3 ore advanced tech to good effect - it's not often players use them. Thanks for posting in what is a quiet monthly challenge.

Kespie, 277! Amazing, congratulations, I think that's the highest score ever. You have the patience to build tall before expanding. As often, science is a strong route.
