New Yahtzee variant Inverted Dice

Post by BinDFW »

There is a new Yahtzee type game on bga in alpha called Inverted Dice. It has been running smoothly and I expect it to be in beta soon.

In Inverted Dice you roll 5 dice (just like Yahtzee) and you can hold any number of dice and reroll the rest, you may also reroll any held dice on your final reroll. The difference is how the dice are scored. In Inverted Dice the Score of the roll is determined by the sum of the Unique Values Not Seen on the roll.

I'll give some examples:

Let's say that you roll a 1-3-3-4-6 on your first roll. To determine the score, we have 2 different methods.

One method is to subtract 21 from the Unique Seen Values. 21-6-4-3-1=7

The other method is to add the Unique Unseen Values. 2+5=7

Because 7 is a pretty common roll result in Inverted Dice we will choose not to score this roll just yet and attempt to improve our score by rerolling.
We can hold some dice just like in Yahtzee and reroll the remaining dice, so we choose to hold the 1-3-4-6 and reroll the second 3.
On the reroll we now have a 1-3-4-5-6.
Method 1= 21-6-5-4-3-1= 2
Method 2= 2 because 2 is the only unique unseen value

As mentioned, some scores have more solutions than others. There are 4 scores with only 1 solution. These scores are:
1: 2-3-4-5-6 (value not seen is a 1)
2: 1-3-4-5-6 (value not seen is a 2)
19: 2-2-2-2-2 (1+3+4+5+6=19)
20: 1-1-1-1-1 (2+3+4+5+6=20)

Let's look at how other scores have a few solutions:
3= 1-2-4-5-6 or 3-4-5-6-r where r represents any repeated value of the roll. This is because 3-3-4-5-6, 3-4-4-5-6, 3-4-5-5-6, 3-4-5-6-6 all equal 3 because the sum of the values not seen equal 3. (1+2=3)

Full Houses and 4's of a kind with the 5th dice being the second value of the full house are equal. Let's take a look:
1-1-1-2-2 = (3+4+5+6=18) 1-1-1-1-2 = (3+4+5+6=18) 2-2-2-1-1 = (3+4+5+6=18) 2-2-2-2-1 = (3+4+5+6=18)

Let's look at some 3 of a kinds with second and third values:
6-6-6-1-2 = (5+4+3= 12)
6-6-6-1-3 = (5+4+2= 11)
6-6-6-2-3 = (5+4+1= 10)
6-6-6-3-4 + (5+2+1= 8)

The score sheet has 3 groups of scores where if a player scores each score of that group, they will receive 50 bonus points in addition to the total for each score.

These groups are 1-5, 6-15, and 16-20. I tend to think of 1-5 as straights and 16-20 as Yahtzee's since they can be scored via straights missing that score's value (this applies to the score of 6 as well) and Yahtzee's of a particular value (this applies to the score of 15 as well)

1: 2-3-4-5-6
2: 1-3-4-5-6
3: 1-2-4-5-6
4: 1-2-3-5-6
5: 1-2-3-4-6
6: 1-2-3-4-5

15: 6-6-6-6-6
16: 5-5-5-5-5
17: 4-4-4-4-4
18: 3-3-3-3-3
19: 2-2-2-2-2
20: 1-1-1-1-1

Early in the game you can try to reroll dice to get into the Yahtzee score values by trying to get low value rolls (1-3) as 15,16,17, and 18 have other solutions rather than Yahtzee's. However if you manage to get an already scored value after your second reroll, you will have to choose a score to sacrifice. I tend to sacrifice my last third group (16-20) that I always call the Yahtzee group. As the game goes on and the closer you get to the end, you'll inevitably be forced to make some sacrifices. This is what makes the game so difficult to get the perfect score of 360.

If this sounds like something you might be interested in, and you don't have access to alpha games message me and I'll set up a turn based game.
