#16 - Solo Challenge [December 2023] ENDED

Post by montybojangles »

Your challenge is to play the Geodens versus the automa of the month, the Taklons (select the 'Automa of the month' button), on the Random map. Check that the seed in the automa score panel is 17014320. It is important that you read the Rules section for more details, especially if the seed is not 17014320.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this challenge is for you. The goal is simple: have fun and get a high score in solo mode. Thanks to the BGA set-up, you can easily compare your score, watch replays of games and learn different ways of playing a faction. (There's more guidance on how to view replays at/near the end of the May challenge.) Play serenely at your leisure: there is no timer pressure!

November was a month of quality over quantity, with kespie topping the chart. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the challenge, in such a positive manner.

There's elite rank for the top 5 players and cadet rank for everyone else.

  • Nigator 219 vs Alptrauma 215 - https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=449776002 - started with academy + mine eco 2 nav 1. In second round research nav 2 built ts and took last orange planet. PI in third round + terra 4. scored 16 vp from mines tech and 25 from fed tech.

1st step: Create a new table. Select Training or Friendly mode and Random map. Choose 1 player/Solo and click on Start game. Select the red box Automa of the month (Taklons).
2nd step: Select the difficulty you think you can handle.
3rd step: Select the faction Geodens. Check that the seed is 17014320 (in the player score panel). If it isn't, start again using the alternative starting method (below).
4th step: Play the game. Post your score(s), mentioning the chosen difficulty (see the format below).

Alternative starting method: Start the game with Random map selected >> Choose the Taklons faction card (as you would for a normal game) >> Set the custom seed (17014320 for this challenge), which is next to the heading 'Choose Automa Difficulty Level', and Select the Automa difficulty >> Choose Geodens.

Players usually insert the link of their game (you can find it on your profile – tab (x) games played) and mention which openings, tech tracks and other actions have been crucial for them (e.g. RL+2M. Economy, aiming for advanced tech tile on AI).

Ideally, use this format: YourNickname Score vs AutomaLevel Score – LinkOfTheGame – Techs focus – YourComment (e.g.: Marcus Aurelius 222 vs Ultoma 165 – www.boardgamearena.com/game=12345 – focus on Science and Terraforming until mid-game, with aim of taking advanced tile on Terraforming).

And don't forget to have fun!

A middling start but a start nonetheless...

bk_marvel 166; Automa 115

Terraforming and Science to start, followed by Navigation. I'm sure I've left points on the board.

Fun though, as ever! Thanks for setting this up agian.

First try: kespie 193 vs 118 Automa - https://boardgamearena.com/5/gaiaprojec ... =446004728 - Ac opening, up eco, then Terra and Nav. Missed out on the advanced techs due to some tactical mistakes. Much room for improvement :)

Wilcobanjo 160 vs Automa 124 - https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=446045201 - Terraforming and Navigation - Push for planetary institute and Terraforming 3 ASAP to take maximum advantage of PI ability, including lost planet at Navigation 5.

(This was my first time playing Automa above the easiest difficulty, both in person and online. I definitely could have been more efficient; among other things, I had 4 extra knowledge at the end with nothing useful to buy with them.)

First try: Kryptor 194 vs. Automächtig 140 - https://boardgamearena.com/7/gaiaprojec ... =446328181

Opend with PI & Nav2. Upped eco & took advanced Eco tech in round 4 (+3 knowledge). Later upped Terra and KI into advanced KI tech for 20 points. Missed many QIC actions last turn.

Second try: Kryptor 205 vs. Automächtig 140 - https://boardgamearena.com/1/gaiaprojec ... =446343731

Similar strategy as above, but slighly optimized, e.g. having advanced eco tech by round 3 instead of 4 and getting Terra & KI advanced techs.

As ever, thanks to everyone for posting. It's great to see games at different automa levels and with so much variation.

Good game! It's not often solo challenge players take an economy advanced tech (3k in this case).

Welcome to the solo challenge. Congratulations on a good first-time Automa-level score given this isn't the easiest of the solo challenges there have been.

I hoped someone would try an Academy opening :D

Score lists updated.

jgpaladin 174 - Automa 118

PI + terraforming advancements to start.

Honestly surprised I scored that well. I felt behind in economy the entire time, and made a couple of terrible choices near the end that purely cost me points. But I did manage to earn fairly well on round-scoring opportunities, and I received 72 end game points (18-18 and 36 for research advancements.)

I'd be shocked if I couldn't bump this fairly significantly in a future attempt.
