How to activate sound?

I am trying to (re)activate sound notifcations (Firefox desktop browser). When choosing a sound in the settings, the site tells me that sound notifications are currently deactivated and that I should click on a speaker symbol to activate them. Where should I find that speaker symbol?

There may be other ways, but the only way I know about is while you're in a game. In the upper right, it is the leftmost of three icons: speaker, expand to full screen, and hamburger button.
