Hi,

You state joining players would have to pay ten dollars to join this tournament. That seems a rather steep price just for joining a tournament here on BGA? If all tournaments did this on BGA my hobby would certainly be a lot more expensive.

What are the befits of this tournament that warrant such an expense?
Are there any other benefits to being a paying member of the BPA at the associate level?
What am I missing here?

I understand your concern. If it helps, I will start the 2025 tournament in December 2024 that way you won’t have to pay again (all entrants must be members of the BPA the year the tournament starts, they do not have to renew in subsequent years to remain active in the tournament).

What are the benefits of this tournament that warrant such an expense?
This is an opportunity to compete in the World Boardgaming Championships from anywhere in the world. There is only one WBC tournament per year. BPA awards a plaque to the tournament winner and laurels to the top 6. Event history and winners for both in person and PBeM events are listed on the website.

Are there any other benefits to being a paying member of the BPA at the associate level?
The $10 helps to run the World Boardgaming Championships, one of the biggest boardgaming tournaments in the world where over 160 games are played competitively. You can also register for the PBeM tournaments for other games.

I would have registered except for the membership fee.

Trust me, if I could eliminate that barrier I would. By offering this tournament 2x per year it is really only $5 per tournament. I will consider doing similar timing for future tournaments, though I'm not sure how many took advantage of it.

Announcing the third Memoir '44 remote PBeM ("play by email") World Boardgaming Championship tournament. Start date is March 1st. It is organized independently outside of BGA. This tournament has been officially approved by both BPA and BGA.

To Register: Send real first and last name, email address, and BGA name via direct message to Winn81 on BGA or BGG.

Eligibility: Players must be members of the Boardgame Players Association (BPA) at the Associate level ($10 USD) or higher. See https://www.boardgamers.org/joinindex.html for details about joining.

Format: Games will take place on Board Game Arena. There will be two phases. Phase 1 is a 5 round swiss system, where players with similar points/skill/luck are paired in each round. Phase 2 is round robin, where each player plays each remaining player once. Based on feedback from last year, the scenarios this time are more strategic "from the front" 6-8 medal scenarios from the days of wonder database. They are some of highest rated scenarios from previous online tournaments from the days of Memoir 44 online.

Hello,

can you simply explain what the Associate level Fee offers to members ?
Is it possible to play other tournaments, other games ?

sorry but the BPA website is so old-fashioned, messy...

Associate level allows you to play in all the online PBeM tournaments. There are many different tournaments besides Memoir '44, not sure the exact amount. The PBEM tab on their website shows the upcoming and ongoing tournaments. Each game can have at most one tournament per year. BPA provides a plaque to the tournament winner.

To help associate level members, the next tournament after this one will start in December, so if you register for this one you will automatically be eligible for that one.
