Puerto Rico doesn't work so well in tournament

Post by Jfet »

I am not sure about the way Puerto Rico tournaments are working.

It is fine if you have 3 equal players. Usually the scores are quite close and it is a good match.

The problem is the system pairs elite players with silver or bronze players, and then one of the elite players is usually
victim to random plays by the bronze (crafting into a big trade for the other player, or just not knowing end game conditions).

I think the way it should work is you only lose points when you lose a game to equal rank players (all three equal rank)

The lower player can gain points in the matches but the higher players don't gain points if the match has lower ranks (but they don't lose points either)

Just happened again.

Elite, elite, bronze. Totally random bad play by bronze player kingmaker'd the ending.

Done with PR tournament, it is a joke.

You're talking about Arena play, not tournaments, which are an entirely different thing. Arena matchmaking does have its problems, but it's also driven by who is available, especially for real-time games. You can adjust settings from the Play Now page (there is a settings cog next to each game on the Arena page) to indicate you only want to play with people at your level, though people have reported mixed success with this. Otherwise, you can stick to non-Arena games, and join/create tables with player rank restrictions (based on ELO there, not Arena rank, but should give you much the same outcome).

As someone pointed out you are confusing tournaments and Arena. You also don't understand what 'kingmaking' is.

If you want to play tournaments there is an option to restrict Elo. Given that what you described is a known issue with PR the solution seems to be to enter tournaments which restrict entry to players of a certain Elo.

Also, this is clearly a subject best raised in the PR forum. It would seem unreasonable to ask for the entire sites structure to be redesigned for one specific game (especially as the site has an option that is suitable).
