#17 - Solo Challenge [JANUARY 2024] ENDED

Post by montybojangles »

Happy New Year and happy gaming to you all. This month it's the faction you've all been waiting for! Your challenge is to play the mighty Gleens versus the automa of the month, the Firaks (select the 'Automa of the month' button), on the Random map. Check that the seed in the automa score panel is 17014320. It is important that you read the Rules section for more details, especially if the seed is not 17041104.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this challenge is for you. The goal is simple: have fun and get a high score in solo mode. Thanks to the BGA set-up, you can easily compare your score, watch replays of games and learn different ways of playing a faction. (There's more guidance on how to view replays at/near the end of the May challenge.) Play serenely at your leisure: there is no timer pressure!

Top marks for the December challenge go to kespie, with a shout-out to Nigator for posting an Alptrauma game.

There's elite rank for the top 5 players and cadet rank for everyone else.

  • danuer13 167 vs Automa 119 - https://boardgamearena.com/3/gaiaprojec ... =458452050 - 1 round just a lab, advanced on the eco track. Then went eco2-nav2-terra. Got booster for big buildings, ac and PI last round. Advanced tech from the eco track, but only on the last round
Image

1st step: Create a new table. Select Training or Friendly mode and Random map. Choose 1 player/Solo and click on Start game. Select the red box Automa of the month (Firaks).
2nd step: Select the difficulty you think you can handle.
3rd step: Select the faction Gleens. Check that the seed is 17041104 (in the player score panel). If it isn't, start again using the alternative starting method (below).
4th step: Play the game. Post your score(s), mentioning the chosen difficulty (see the format below).

Alternative starting method: Start the game with Random map selected >> Choose the Firaks faction card (as you would for a normal game) >> Set the custom seed (17041104 for this challenge), which is next to the heading 'Choose Automa Difficulty Level', and Select the Automa difficulty >> Choose Gleens.

Players usually insert the link of their game (you can find it on your profile – tab (x) games played) and mention which openings, tech tracks and other actions have been crucial for them (e.g. RL+2M. Economy, aiming for advanced tech tile on AI).

Ideally, use this format: YourNickname Score vs AutomaLevel Score – LinkOfTheGame – Techs focus – YourComment (e.g.: Marcus Aurelius 222 vs Ultoma 165 – www.boardgamearena.com/game=12345 – focus on Science and Terraforming until mid-game, with aim of taking advanced tile on Terraforming).

And don't forget to have fun!

There's no way this is a top score, but figured I'd kick off the replies.
I think I need to get income instead of worrying about the Gleen specifically.

SoftServeBadBoy 142 vs Automa 125

Tech Focus: Terra-5, Nav-3, Income-5. I didn't advance any other tracks.
I was dealt the end game scoring tiles for most colonized different types of planets and most number of structures in a federation.
I love the Gleens because it just feels like such a pain to get QIC sometimes and I love to not have to worry about it. That being said I didn't even upgrade the right side academy that changes that until the last round. I would never do that upgrade in an early round. Honestly I don't really think it was necessary to take away that power when reveling the right academy. It should just be a special action space to gain ore.
I built a couple of unnecessary structures so i was a little surprised by the victory. I seemed pretty behind in the first few rounds. I was heavily relying on end game points to lift me up. Even with a neutral token on the scoring track, when playing 2 player game set up I often feel gravity held by those the zero sum essence of end game points to heavily impact my focus. I find myself sidetracking in game points. I'll try again after I watch a few other peoples games.

First try..
kespie 163 vs 131 Automa - https://boardgamearena.com/4/gaiaprojec ... =457752307 - Ac opening, up eco, then scraping by. Much better strategies are possible I think :)

Somewhat better:
kespie 177 vs 148 Automachtig - https://boardgamearena.com/1/gaiaprojec ... =457789313 - Ac opening, then advance to nav2, terra3 and gaia1. Waited with taking green planets until round 4/5. Got top terra and top gaia in the end, won buildings in fed, tied planet types. Wasted some resources on the northwestern mines, can be done better!

Similar game but better:
kespie 184 vs 148 Automachtig - https://boardgamearena.com/5/gaiaprojec ... =457794127 - Ac opening, then advance to nav2, terra3 and gaia1. Waited with taking green planets until round 4/5. Got top terra and top gaia in the end, won buildings in fed, tied planet types.

Looking forward to alternative approaches!

Thanks everyone for posting. Here's my first attempt, done before looking at replays (which is why I haven't updated the scores lists or commented on games).

montybojangles 168 vs Automa 119 - https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=457825008 - started with TS and mines (!). I missed the gaia round bonuses because I ran out of mines (duh!), but had plenty of resources mid to late end game.

dudu_urban 137 vs Automa 128 – https://boardgamearena.com/9/gaiaprojec ... =457927724 – Focus on Gaia planets - Navigation tech was the first focus, and terraforming tech was focus in late game.

Much better than first attempt, but wow I left a lot on the table.
Started with AC, raced to economy tech. Later advanced navigation.
Focused on gaia bonuses in rounds 4/5 but since I never advanced gaia project my opportunities were limited.
Finished with 5 foundation tiles but wasted a bunch of builds that I didn't manage to turn into a 4th foundation.
Forgot to advance to top of economy for the last round pile of stuff...

Thanks for posting first - and could you add the link to this game? And yes, a fourth natural federation might be achievable, though I suspect is a little beyond reach. It's noticeable that the higher scores so far have more efficient federations.

Unusually for a solo challenge, your current high score hasn't got an advance in economy or science, and no qic actions!

As an observation, this is a good nav2 map for Gleens with plenty of buildings round boosters and gaiaforming opportunities but I feel Gleens would do better with round boosters for mines, gaia planets and giving credits, for example.

Scores lists updated.
