#18 - Solo Challenge [FEBRUARY 2024] ENDED

Post by montybojangles »

A new month, a new solo challenge. You are to play the Terrans versus the automa of the month, the Itars (select the 'Automa of the month' button), on the Random map. Check that the seed in the automa score panel is 17067888. It is important that you read the Rules section for more details, especially if the seed is not 17067888.

Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this challenge is for you. The goal is simple: have fun and get a high score in solo mode. Thanks to the BGA set-up, you can easily compare your score, watch replays of games and learn different ways of playing a faction. (There's more guidance on how to view replays at/near the end of the May challenge.) Play serenely at your leisure: there is no timer pressure!

As ever, thank you to everyone who tried the challenge and posted scores. There was a nice variety of games. And I'm declaring joint champions for January's challenge, Nigator for their Alptrauma game and top-scoring kespie.

There's elite rank for the top 5 players and cadet rank for everyone else.

1st step: Create a new table. Select Training or Friendly mode and Random map. Choose 1 player/Solo and click on Start game. Select the red box Automa of the month (Itars).
2nd step: Select the difficulty you think you can handle.
3rd step: Select the faction Terrans. Check that the seed is 17067888 (in the player score panel). If it isn't, start again using the alternative starting method (below).
4th step: Play the game. Post your score(s), mentioning the chosen difficulty (see the format below).

Alternative starting method: Start the game with Random map selected >> Choose the Itars faction card (as you would for a normal game) >> Set the custom seed (17067888 for this challenge), which is next to the heading 'Choose Automa Difficulty Level', and Select the Automa difficulty >> Choose Terrans.

Players usually insert the link of their game (you can find it on your profile – tab (x) games played) and mention which openings, tech tracks and other actions have been crucial for them (e.g. RL+2M. Economy, aiming for advanced tech tile on AI).

Ideally, use this format: YourNickname Score vs AutomaLevel Score – LinkOfTheGame – Techs focus – YourComment (e.g.: Marcus Aurelius 222 vs Ultoma 165 – www.boardgamearena.com/game=12345 – focus on Science and Terraforming until mid-game, with aim of taking advanced tile on Terraforming).

And don't forget to have fun!

New month! Terrans again, that hasn't been long?

Anyway, took me a couple of tries to get a score over 200:
kespie 205 vs 132 Automa - https://boardgamearena.com/4/gaiaprojec ... =470494126 - Ac opening, up science, then some Nav/Gaia/AI. Went for nav advanced tile. Lots of points for green planets in last round

I'm currently playing the challenge, but I'm not used to playing GP on bga. Even though I set the "ask for conversions after action" option to always, I'm not being prompted for it after the action. E.g., started the turn with power 0/1/2, converted 1pw->1c, up tech lv2 to lv3 (+3pw) ... <expected another prompt> but the turn ended immediately and the automa played.

(1) Is this an exclusive limitation of solo mode, (2) is it a bga bug in GP overall, (3) have I played hundreds of matches (both physically and in bgs) with the wrong rules or (4) something else?

Also related, in Terra Mystica, the same prompt works as expected and features an "undo" button, which I didn't see at all during the challenge (and I would've used it). I couldn't undo even basic free-conversions after clicking ok, before following up with the action itself. Does someone know why that is the case? Maybe I'm missing some config, idk.

(apologies if this should've been posted somewhere else, I just happened to stumble on the issues during the challenge - I'll post my result once I finish the match)

edit: 143 Terrans vs. 132 Automa (https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=470467141)
Started with terraform booster, opened with gaiaformer on adjacent purple, m->ts, booster/terraform a second mine on red (mid sector), ts->lab tech sci (act 4pw). Didn't open AC since r2 gave me vps for that. Made many silly mistakes (some due to the issues mentioned above, some for barely knowing the dynamics of playing solo, some just for being a noob xD). Anyways, super fun idea, will try again vs. hardest skynet mode

Hi. In haste, just to acknowledge your query: I'll try that option tomorrow, but maybe someone else will share their knowledge. However, GP on BGA has been almost bug free ... EDIT: I've submitted a bug report.
There is no Undo option for solo or multiplayer, so one has to live with mistakes, but that's the beauty of the seeding system whereby you can start a game with the same set-up and try again. Thanks for trying the challenge.

Time has flown for you, because they were challenges 1 and 6 (September 2022 and February 2023). There will be repeats now because all the factions except Lantids have been set, though I'll choose different pairings and the maps and tech and round set-ups will be different.

Four tries, four different approaches, four somewhat similar results...

jgpaladin 148 - Automa 132
https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=470226306
jgpaladin 144 - Automa 132
https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=470297255
jgpaladin 158 - Automa 132
https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=471110382
jgpaladin 156 - Automa 132
https://boardgamearena.com/table?table=471153437

I feel like the two starting planets are obvious. Nothing else though... :)
With Terrans I feel like you really want to get to PI and start turning gaia planets to net the benefit, but does that have to happen in round 1? It sacrifices other incomes from heading toward AC. AC1 or AC2? And which techs to research? Aargh.

I've also found with this particular setup I'm having a tough time taking advantage of the round bonuses, which is a likely source of my problem.

Thankfully I have a long time to keep working at it. :)

second approach - basically the same but implemented getting advanced tech from nav in the 5th round

Good score! Yes, the advanced tech tile at the top of nav is very strong.

Score lists updated.

Skynetseven 167 vs Automat 129 - is the replay this link https://boardgamearena.com/7/gaiaprojec ... =473497495 or https://boardgamearena.com/gamereview?table=473497495? Also, if I get a better score, do I update/edit this post or make new one?
