Couldn't spend resources

Yes you can...
If you need.
And only if you need.

Resources are not materialized in the game.
So you can never stockpile resources, it is physically impossible to do so if you own the "real" game.
So, in practice, you can gain resource at end of round only if you have some character (like Luca di Borgo) that can immediately use them. (And you do so by using the said character which then prompts you to provide the said resources which you then do by moving a ship to port)

This thing was confusing for me also.

The game do not understand what u need if you do not show what u need.

For example if u move a boat to port u will gain bread.

But if u choose construction action OR invite OR if u click on a private destination to buy … the game will understand u need ressources.

Then if u move ur boat down u will be able to pay with ressources.

So don’t forget :

First u tell the game what u need … if u don’t u will have bread.

But In the board game, when you bring a ship to port, you can convert it into bread or three resources of your choice (as indicated by the icon). In the online version, you can only convert it into bread... or perhaps I've missed a feature of the online version.
