Am I misunderstanding why I didn't move forward in this tournament?

I finished with the most points but I'm not moving forward in the tournament? Someone took too long with their turn and got booted from the game. I did take all of my turns after it happened and finished in first. What are the rules in these situations and how do I avoid it happening again?

When a multiplayer elimination match ends by expulsion/quit of a player, the player(s) with the oldest BGA accounts advance (not counting the expelled player).
If, on the other hand, a match ends by reaching its maximum round length, the players who used the least time advance.
In-game points do not matter in either case.
Here are two other recent threads about this:

EDIT: To answer your last question as well: There is no way to avoid this happening to you. Someone else in the match can run out of time, anyone else can expel them, and then if you don't have one of the top 2 (in this case) oldest accounts, you get eliminated. The only solution is to not play multiplayer elimination tournaments.

This is the way. To a first order approximation they will never fix this issue, so this is the only way to avoid it.
That's assuming it *can* be fixed. There are other threads going on for pages with the only thing being decided is that it's clear no one can agree on the best way to fix it.
