If I have primate breeding program and a sponsor which gives me a primate icon (e.g. primatologist, free range new world monkeys), can I play it and then use its tag to play primate breeding program? If so, do I just need any partner zoo to count? Curious about this because the breeding program card doesn't seem to specifically indicate an animal requirement.

Nope,

The wording is

"Requires 1 ( animal type, i.e. predator, bird etc) and a partner zoo of the same continent"

And while you are right that it doesnt say animals it does mention it by name ( birds) and not the icon.
Also since it says the partner zoo needs to be of the SAME continent this rules out sponsor cards with animals icons because they don't have a continent to match with.
