How is Second Place Determined?

I am loving this game, but getting a little frustrated: twice I've thought for sure I'd be the second place player and at least inch my way up a little more in the 100 elo goal only to see it say second place, but no movement because... I was the 2nd, 2nd place player?

And another could times I did get 2nd place and could not figure out why I did instead of the other not-first place player.

And now, looking at my stats... It looks like the game thinks I've abandoned 5 games, but I neither remember doing so nor does there seem to be any evidence of it...so... Maybe... It's pulling... From... Something else for that?

Someone please help me make sense of second place?(And if you have answers on the abandoned games part, that'd be amazing, but that's not going to make me scream into the sky in frustrated confusion :) )

And also, and unrelated:  I love reading the previous posts in here. There's such a phenomenal counterbalance of cool reasoning against the typical "rigged!" And "bad dice!" comments.

I'm pretty sure (haven't played in multiple months) that you get a "point" for each column/number you get to the top of.

So, the winner will finish with 3 points, and everyone else will have 0, 1, or 2 depending on how many columns they claimed. Higher points win.

If there is a tie at that level, it remains a tie (no tie breaker).
