Creating a group to surrender the game if matched together in a turn-based arena?

Recently, while playing Ark Nova, a turn-based game, I've noticed that some players propose surrendering the game at the beginning when matched against specific opponents too frequently

I assume this is because of the new elo change. As I understand it: Because you're penalized for playing the same opponent repeatedly, even though you theoretically have no choice in arena, the only option players have is to stop playing arena (surely this isn't the goal?) or attempt to avoid other good players.
It's been a hotly complained about issue for months.

ELO algorithm does not affect Arena points.

I'm not sure about the motivation then. Perhaps when this occurred, you asked one of the players about their motivation, or the group mentions it?

I had an opponent propose collectively abandoning the game which I'm assumed was at least partly influenced by a sub-optimal starting hand.
I declined.
They eventually outright surrendered at around halfway as the score was becoming lopsided so who knows maybe it was just trying to avoid me.
