So is “easy start” the official Friendly Robber rule, or is it some other variant?

It's been over a month, and I still encounter complainers and whiners in Arena when I rob them at the start of the game!
To answer the other question in this thread, Easy Start is a different variant than Friendly Robber. When Easy Start is enabled in the base game, all sevens are rerolled for the first two rounds after placement of the two initial settlements. (In the Cities & Knights expansion, there are further aspects of this variant.)

I play friendly robber because I really dislike being targeted just because I have a higher ELO. I find that many games on turn-based do not have that option. Very interesting because the robber can have a huge impact on the game at the beginning, and it's all by chance. It can make a game not as exciting.

You're a premium member on BGA so you can start your own turn-based games with the options you like best. In case you're not aware how to do it, I recommend this method:
1. navigate to
https://boardgamearena.com/lobby
2. in the drop-down menus at the top, select "SIMPLE GAME", "TURN-BASED", and "MANUAL"
3. click on "Catan" (assuming it's visible under your favourite games; otherwise use the search function)
4. click the blue "Create" button
5. under "Table configuration" select whatever options you prefer (for more info on the options see
viewtopic.php?t=26914 )
6. click "Restrict table access" and select any options you like (I usually set "restrict by reputation" to "≥ 85%"); then click OK
7. set the "Number of players" by clicking on the minus and plus symbols
8. click "Open table to other players"
