I think it's pretty common to end a game with a "gg" (good game) in chat.
Quite often it happens, that this results in some answer like "not really", "maybe for you", or "bad game".
I would really like to know if that player is just annoyed about loosing or a general bad looser - or if he/she didn't get the meaning of "gg".
I play Darts in real life and before each game there is a handshake/fistbump and after each game alike.
Same applies in many other sports, you bow to each other or you clap hands or you make some other common gesture.
It is simply a question of respect and honoring your opponent, no matter if you won or lost.
That's why I'm not only writing "gg", but also a "hf" (have fun) at the start.
I just can't understand why it occurs so often that you just face rude players, something which is total alien for me in the board game world.

How often when playing over a real board are your opponents semi-anonymous with none of the typical in-person social constraints inhibiting them?

Saying 'gg' is fine. Lots of players don't like it - they think it is rote and somewhat insulting. You don't have to care that they think that but its one of those elements where you cannot tell them they are wrong for thinking it.

Note, if a player steps over the line and writes something abusive in response to your 'gg' you should report them.

Not loudly, no, but I have said that in person to people, as I've also said "good game." (And it's "jee jee," not "guh guh." )

Sure, "gg" is rote. The idea is that it's a quick, simple gesture of respect. I don't expect opponents to write a unique treatise on good gameplay after each game, after all. It is, at the bottom of it all, good sportsmanship, an acknowledgement that we may be opponents, but we're not enemies. And now that the game is over, we're not even opponents any more.

People who resent "gg," or consider it insulting, are being immature. People who get abusive in response to it, doubly so. But it's not worth engaging with them. Red-flag them if you think it's warranted, report them if it's egregious. But regardless, move on and let them stew in their own salt.

Do you ever hear or say "not really" in response to a "good morning" (e.g. after a rough night, or when it's awful weather, or when there's some bad news to share...)? It can be the same with "gg".

I don't resent it or find it insulting, but I do find it it often said by rote (same with "gl hf") and starts to become meaningless. So I don't usually say either - though I do say gg when I feel like I have seen a good game, either well-played, closely fought, whatever. But I don't say it on every game, cause I want it to mean something when I do say it. That's just me though, and others are free to do as they wish. I do get annoyed though when others suggest that NOT engaging in the same practices as them makes them rude, ignorant, etc. (ie. someone who doesn't always say gg and/or "gl hf" is clearly rude). I would also agree that people who respond to gg with complaints about their own play (eg. "not really", "maybe for you", etc. as noted in the original post) are also being rude - better to not say anything if that's how you feel.

I find the auto-translated message of "Thanks for the game!" is more accurate to what I am trying to convey and avoids the issue of people saying "not for me". If there was something striking about the game I can also comment on that separately.

There is a button Go to Chat and click the meeple, second icon from the right on the bottom. A list of canned chat sayings is there and "Thanks for the game" is on the bottom of that list
