Extra turns should give extra time?

Hi All

I was just kicked out of a game after playing eagle, eagle and sunbear on the last turn - i know, lucky me.

Unfortunately the processing of the game moves themselves took to long and my opponent who would clearly have lost, bootet me out of the game.

I think you should get extra time for extra actions in the ui, its so sweet beeing able to take extra actions and its really frustrating to loose that way after you allready won.

What do you think?

Greetings

Extra turns can never give extra time because it's open to abuse.
Play Eagle > Gain 1 minute of thinking time > Undo move.
Now you can make a game last indefinitely by repeating this sequence.

This used to be a problem in Castles of Burgundy where undoing a move would give you time back. People used to stall out games until their opponents got bored and left.

The game you were playing was set to "Fast Speed". The simple solution for the future is to restrict your settings to avoid this time control.

The best clock system I encountered is time per move + bank time that is used once time per move runs out. It best encapsulates how you use time in board games, as most moves are quick and only once in a while you need more time to ponder.

But that's a huge change to a whole system.

That's exactly how it works here, no ? You have a bank of X min max, and +Y sec per move, so it's essentialy the same.

The main difference (I guess) is that here the unused time in your turn goes into refilling your time bank

I can see an argument for a scheme where you get Y time per turn and X time in the bank. If you play a turn within Y, nothing happens, next turn you'll get Y again and your bank stays at X. If you use more than Y in a turn, the bank will decrease accordingly, and will never be refilled.

A problem is that many players do not save their time bank for the lengthy last turns but start those turns with an already depleted/reduced bank...

Well not exactly, as you replenish your bank with every move here. So it doesn't give you budget for the entire game, just for few consecutive moves.

It might be helpful if you actually defined the time amounts you think would be right for the bank and the turn. And maybe suggest to BGA letting players customize the bank and turn alotments, so you could actually achieve that in play. I honestly think 95 seconds a turn with a 4 minute bank is pretty reasonable for standard play (normal realtime speed). That gives you 2.5x a normal turn for a long turn which really should cover a free turn pretty reasonably.

But as far 'best encapsulates how you use time in board games' I think that goes to the 'No turn limit - Friends only' style. Where the only limit on how long you take for your turns is based on how much you are willing to annoy your friends.

Depends on the group of friends :P. In 2 of the groups I play we introduced clock in chosen games and it did wonders. People who occasionally struggled with analysis paralysis were cured, some stopped being annoyed by others taking their time (as now it is resource that your opponent is using).

While I would never introduce it in a casual group, I strongly recommend people try it in more veteran environment.
