Board Game Arena

We just had an argument in a recent game. I don't see anything in the rules about this, so I thought I'd ask. For someone's last name that has a space in it, does it count as one word? Examples used were da Vinci and Van Gogh. To me, that's one word since it's their last names. But my clue was vetoed.

Why should they be special? It's two words, like Red Baron, merry Christmas, French fries, match point... The fact that they are used together for a particular meaning, does not make them one word. Only the absence of a space would make them one word.

Use Leonardo and Vincent instead.

For completeness, note that the 2nd edition rules explicitly permit hyphens, so if the name is normally hyphenated* then it is legal. For example, López-Alt is a legal clue for chef.


* I would take the Wikipedia page as a guide - and I assume that you won't clue a name of someone who doesn't have a Wikipedia page unless you really know your teammate well.
