Scythe - Penalty points in the final scoring

I don't understand or find anything in the rules about the minus points at end game scoring. Can someone explain this to me?

If you place a bid on a faction then it is subtracted from your points at the end of the game. It's only used in auction mode.

To be clear, that number is already subtracted from your starting score if you have live scoring on. In the recount it will show it as minus in totaling up your score, but it's not that your "live score" number will be reduced by that amount. The bid is built into the live scoring mechanism already.
