Interesting interraction with Lost Planet placement

Encountered something interesting in a three player game. The Gleen player topped navigation and realised they could place the Lost Planet four tiles away crossing the edge of the map (image attached for reference). They have no other planets in range of that space and the range was calculated from the mine in the lower hex. The three of us were quite surprised and didn't realise this was possible.

Oh sorry it won't let me attach the image. But if you can imagine a mine on the top hex of the bottom right sector in a three player game and the Lost Planet was placed in the bottom hex of the top right sector, the four range traversing over the empty space where a hex would normally be in a four player game. Has anyone else ever encountered this?

It comes down to if range should extend outside of the game map. My initial thought is that it shouldn't. That part of the map doesn't really exist so it doesn't seem appropriate to be able to make a route through it. This map layout is not standard so this situation isn't really covered in the rulebook. I had a look in the BGG rules forum but couldn't see it mentioned.
