I had a moved planned that hinged on buying mixed fruits with my one remaining coin, discounted with my large storage,but the discount won't apply. Did I misunderstand the rules?

Doesn't Large Storage just provide a discount on items? (i.e. bottles, casks, stuff in that bottom market row)

Mixed fruit is a (basic) ingredient. You can use ingredient discounts (such as malt mill) on them. Item discounts (such as large storage) only work on basic and premium items (such as barrels and bottles).

The word item in the rules context of this game refers to a subset of cards. It does not refer to expenditures in a global sense.
