how is this possible?

You get one each time you reserve a card. You can only have 3 cards reserved at once, but after you buy one of those cards, you can reserve another. As long as he didn't spend the gold along the way, that would give him 4 gold.

There is no limit on how many gold a player can have beyond the fact there's only 5 gold total. Since you get gold by reserving cards, and there's no limit on how many times you can reserve over the course of the game (just how many reserved cards can be held at once), there's no reason they couldn't have 4 gold.
