Preselected hand?

When configuring a game, you have a "preselected" hand option (the other option is "random hand.")

What is the preselected hand?

I've read the rulebook and it doesn't say anything about this variant.

I'd like to set the game so that the starting hands are as even as possible, so "preselected" seems like the better option, but there is still randomness as to what cards each player starts with, right? Does anybody know the algorithm or rule the software is using to pick preselected hands?

It's mentioned in the rulebook. Not in the setup section where you might expect it, but on page 12 under "Game Duration, Starting Hands, and Difficulty".
When playing with new or younger players, you might like to use the optional
3-card starting hands shown on the back of the player reference cards. Use these in
place of a random 5-card starting hand for every player. The effects of these 3-card
combinations have been designed to complement each other.
