Marine Worlds - two "what's the point" questions

So Marine Worlds seems really good, it's early days but so far I'm liking it a lot.

There are two things though where I'm not sure what is the point of a thing.

Firstly, on the "Conference on Europe" card, there's an instruction "For each Europe icon you play into your zoo, mark one card". I can't tell what is achieved by marking a card, because I never got to play CoE. I can't even tell which sort of card is marked, and with what.

The other is a thing called "shift worker" where you can take an association worker and put them on your notepad. I can't tell what is good about this thing, and why anyone would want to do it.

Anyone know, please?

Marking a card on a display gives it to you once it falls off, if somebody else snaps it you gain money instead. (3?)

Returning a worker from the assoc board means you can use it again, and not only that, you can put it on the same spot, meaning instead of 3 workers to do 2 projects in one break, you can do it with only 1 worker.

Not quite: if it leaves due to discard, you get it (with an exception if the discard is due to the special digging of map 10). If it leaves for any other reason, including you snapping it or playing it with Animals II, you get 2 money.
